I just today got a Canon 50 mm lens that can open up to an aperture of 1.8. I ran outside over lunch to try the lens on a friend's Canon Rebel xt.
This "cheaper" lens is pretty fantastic. I didn't have much time, but here is one of the shots I took.
I've decided to tell my beginning photographer friends (who want to know what to buy) to get a less expensive Canon SLR (like a Rebel) and this lens. It's a great way to start out! And the lens costs just over $100 (much less than the professional version at $1,200).
